• This is a match both teams will believe they can win, and one that both need to after each started their UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) group stage campaign with defeat. It’s unknown territory for Armenian champions Alashkert who have never faced Finnish opposition before, but they at least ended a dreadful 14-game run of failing to win within 90 minutes as they beat rivals Ararat Yerevan in the Armenian Super Cup final last week.
• While not much is expected from the home side in their debut UEFA group stage campaign, they nearly held Sheriff Tiraspol to a draw at this very stadium during European qualifying, only falling to defeat after conceding a late goal. Sheriff have since beaten Real Madrid in the Champions League, so Alashkert clearly have some quality, but just four goals from six domestic league games this season shows it’s probably not upfront.
• This isn’t HJK’s first match against Armenian opposition, and whilst they’ve not played an Armenian side in over two decades, their six previous such meetings will mostly bring good memories (W4, L2). They’ll need to tap into those to help get over the morale-sapping 2-0 home loss to LASK on UECL matchday one which sparked a four-game run of not scoring a single goal (D1, L3).
• Enjoying their third European group stage campaign, the record 30-time Finnish champions certainly have more continental pedigree than their hosts, and even played in the Champions League group stage back in 1998/99!
• Players to watch: José Embaló scored the winner in the Armenian Super Cup and was Alashkert’s sole goalscorer on UECL matchday one. It’s a family affair for the Finns as brothers Roope Riski (eight goals) and Riku Riski (three) scored 11 of HJK’s 17 goals during 2021/22 European qualifying.
• Hot stat: Alashkert have failed to find the net within 90 minutes in eight of their previous ten home games in European action.
