Arsenal boosted their top-four chances with a resolute 1-0 win at Wolves last time out despite suffering their 15th red card under Mikel Arteta’s tenure as boss – nearly double the next worst side over that period. Arteta commented post-match that he’s “run out of ideas” on how to combat the problem, but it does at least highlight the team’s new-found determination which has seen them keep 11 Premier League (PL) clean sheets this season – a figure which certainly could have been higher if they’d kept 11 players on the pitch more often!
That win versus Wolves was Arsenal’s first in 2022, but with teams around them slipping up recently, gaining revenge for their opening-day loss at Brentford could put the ‘Gunners’ in pole position for that all-important Champions League place. They haven’t won in two PL home games though, and do have goalscoring issues, but they’re generally strong at the Emirates, where they’ve struck first in nine PL games and only given up two first-half goals.
That’s been an Achilles’ heel for Brentford this season, who’ve conceded first in a joint-league high 17 league games, subsequently resulting in being behind at the break on a league-worst 12 occasions. They stopped the rot somewhat last weekend with a 0-0 draw, a result which also halted their PL losing streak at five.
Recent away form has played a major part in the early season euphoria around the club now turning into relegation nervousness, with the ‘Bees’ winless in their last eight league trips (D2, L6) after going unbeaten in their opening four. The manner of those defeats will concern coach Thomas Frank, with Brentford going down by multi-goal margins each time.
Players to watch: Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette has scored in round 26 three years running (W3), while Brentford will pray Ivan Toney is back after scoring their last three goals.
