After ending last season with a flurry of wins to escape relegation and then surviving being demoted due to financial issues (a feat they actually suffered in 1990/91), Bordeaux already sit second bottom of the standings (D2, L2) and seem set for another difficult season.
It’s subsequently been a baptism of fire for ex-Switzerland coach Vladimir Petković, who only took charge in July. The arrival of Lens could inspire Petković and his team to get off the mark this season, as Bordeaux are unbeaten in 12 home matches against their northern visitors (W8, D4). Certainly scoring first should provide a pointer as to the eventual points distribution, as only one of the last 24 L1 games at the Matmut Atlantique has seen any side come from behind to win.
In contrast, Lens are unbeaten over the opening four rounds (W1, D3) in a continuation of the good work from 2020/21 when they finished seventh in their first season back in the top flight, following a five-year absence. They’ve shown plenty of grit too, coming back to claim three draws after going behind in the first half.
Their lone win this season was achieved on the road despite having a man disadvantage for 25 minutes, once again highlighting the team spirit that coach Franck Haise has created at the club. That togetherness helped them register the fifth best away record last season, and they’ll need a similar effort this campaign to better that and challenge for a European place.
Players to watch: A scorer last round for Bordeaux, Rémi Oudin’s last 11 L1 strikes have served as either the first or last match goal. Seko Forfana’s goals this season have also wrapped up the match scoring and been directly responsible for Lens’ three draws.
Hot stat: This H2H hasn’t seen a come-from-behind league victory (any venue) since Bordeaux’s 2-1 success in April 1997, 31 games ago.
