The 17th and 18th placed teams in La Liga (LL) come into the weekend prepared to go to war as Elche take on Cádiz at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero. These two have so far matched each other stride-for-stride in terms of their results this LL season (W2, D6, L7), with only goal difference allowing the hosts to peak their heads above the relegation zone.
‘Los Franjiverdes’ only have themselves to blame for their current situation, especially as they’ve dropped 11 points after opening the scoring – the highest such tally of any LL side this term (W2, D4, L1). That played a big role in the sacking of Fran Escribá, but home fans will now hope for a ‘new manager bounce’ as they officially welcome new coach Francisco Rodríguez.

Those may be the words coach Álvaro Cervera echoes in the dressing room, as he attempts to take his team’s mind off their last LL two games, after they conceded four goals in each. That shouldn’t deter Cádiz though, as they’ve proven they can spring a surprise on the road, winning eight of their 12 LL points away from home.
Players to watch: Elche’s Lucas Boyé has scored the match opener in his last five domestic goalscoring outings, while Cádiz will see Choco Lozano as a good luck charm, having lost just once when the Honduran has found the net (W8, D5, L1).
Hot stat: Cádiz have conceded the most LL goals after the 75th minute of any side – the 11 they’ve let in during that period accounts for 41% of their total goals.
