• Cologne’s 5-2 dismantling of Holstein Kiel in last season’s Bundesliga relegation play-off proved to be one of very few bright spots in a remarkably disappointing campaign. Here though, the ‘Billy Goats’ have the perfect fixture to begin their redemption, at home to a side that they are currently unbeaten against across the last three H2Hs (W1, D2).
• The hosts have, however, lost their previous three Bundesliga openers. With Cologne also being the third-lowest scorers in the top-flight last campaign, there may be a heavy reliance on new permanent signing Mark Uth and returning hero Anthony Modeste from the very outset.
• Unlike Cologne, visiting Hertha Berlin pulled away from relegation worries late on during the previous Bundesliga campaign, largely thanks to a run of just one loss from their final nine matches (W3, D5). This summer, they’ve again spent money in order to strengthen across the field, in a bid to avoid a repeat of last season’s failings.
• The away side will be further buoyed here thanks to their unbeaten run of eight Bundesliga openers (W6, D2). This stands as the competition’s second-best record behind champions Bayern Munich, with Hertha winning three of their four last such fixtures on the road. Yet, with none of the last four Bundesliga H2Hs witnessing both teams score, the first goal might be crucial either way.
• Players to watch: Returning striker Mark Uth registered five goals and five assists in 15 Bundesliga matches during his loan stint with Cologne in 2019/20. There’s also a long-awaited return for Hertha’s Kevin-Prince Boateng after a 14-year absence – the midfielder previously had 12 direct goal involvements in 42 Bundesliga matches for the capital club.
• Hot stat: Seventeen (85%) of the last 20 teams to lead a Bundesliga H2H at HT have ended up winning.
