Any hopes Latvia had of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup look to be slowly dwindling with each passing match. They come into this clash second from bottom in World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) Group G, having beaten only pointless basement boys Gibraltar to date (D2, L4). Their toothless forward line has been the main cause for concern during this campaign, as they’ve now failed to score in their last three WCQ outings.
Prior to blanking in each of their last two matches on home soil, the hosts had netted exactly three goals in consecutive home victories against the aforementioned Gibraltar and neighbours Lithuania. Although they face much tougher opposition in the form of Turkey here, it’s interesting to note that they also netted three times in the most recent H2H back in March, so an upset here can’t be ruled out completely.
That encounter was one of three WCQ draws for Turkey who have so far had a decent qualifying campaign (W3, L1). They’re favourites to come out on top in this clash and keep pace with the leading two in the group, although they’ve also been odds-on favourites in each of the last four H2H clashes across the last decade, yet all four ended level!
Stefan Kuntz’s men should be confident of bettering that record this time around though based on the fact that only one of their last six WCQ away matches saw a stalemate (W3, L2). Their only two defeats in that run also came against nations currently ranked higher than they are by FIFA (#41).
Players to watch: With goals at a premium, Latvian eyes will be on Roberts Uldriķis who scored in the last H2H and in his most recent club appearance. Hakan Çalhanoğlu also scored in that fixture, and he netted in Turkey’s second to most recent away WCQ match.
Hot stat: The last three H2H matches produced 5+ yellow cards, as did Turkey’s last two international fixtures.
