Lens suffered a second consecutive 2-0 defeat last time out, and in doing so stretched their poor run to just two wins across ten prior Ligue 1 matches (D3, L5). They’re now aiming to avoid a third straight blank in front of goal for the first time in the league since the final three fixtures of last season, particularly as a repeat of that unwanted feat coupled with another loss would surely signal an end to any realistic aspirations of securing European football for the first time since 2008.
Although overall form has faltered recently, Lens have still managed to remain a tough nut to crack on their own turf. Lens likely couldn’t have picked a better opponent to improve their form against than troubled Bordeaux who sacked manager Vladimir Petković this week with the club firmly rooted in the relegation zone. His final act was to oversee his side lose their fourth league game in five matches, shipping 3+ goals in four of those encounters, meaning Bordeaux have conceded more league goals than any other Ligue 1 side this season (58).
You’d have to go back to last May for Bordeaux’s last league clean sheet and it’s hard to envisage that run ending here. The visitors might be boosted by the fact that May’s shut out came against Lens though, whilst they could take further comfort from the fact that only Monaco have recorded more Ligue 1 H2H victories versus Lens than they have (W41, D30, L32).
Players to watch: Lens’ Seko Fofana has scored three goals across his last six competitive appearances, each arriving after the 60th minute. Opponent Hwang Ui-jo has scored in three of Bordeaux’s four league victories this season.
Hot stat: Bordeaux are hoping to avoid becoming the first Ligue 1 side in nearly 43 years to concede five goals in three consecutive away matches.
