A stunning 3-2 away win against Marseille last time out lifted Lens up to second spot in the Ligue 1 (L1) standings thanks to a fantastic opening eight-game stint (W4, D3, L1). That’s the club’s highest league position since 2006/07, the same season that Lens last qualified for European competition, and something that manager Franck Haise will be aiming for after his side missed out by just one point last campaign.
The home side’s indifferent form at Stade Bollaert-Delelis will have to improve for that to occur though, having won only one of their opening four L1 home matches this campaign (D2, L1). In fact, Lens have kept just two clean sheets in their last 11 L1 home matches which remains a concern.
After struggling at the start of the 2021/22 campaign, Reims are finally beginning to find their feet under new boss Óscar García and enjoyed a 3-1 over Nantes last time out in L1. That scoreline extended the visitors’ run to losing just twice in eight L1 matchups this season (W2, D4), although there’s still a long way to go if they’re to reach the same heights as they did during the 2019/20 campaign when they finished sixth.
Somewhat famed for their defensive solidity in recent seasons, this campaign has left little to be desired for the away side who have already conceded two or more goals in a match on three occasions. Their finishing also needs to improve as they remain the joint-fourth lowest goalscorers (ten) in L1 before this weekend’s action.
Players to watch: Lens’ Przemysław Frankowski is enjoying a fantastic start to the season as he’s notched five goal contributions in eight L1 matches (2G, 3A). Meanwhile, Reims winger Hugo Ekitike came off the bench last time out to bag a brace vs Nantes.
