A second straight ‘El Tráfico’ defeat condemned LA Galaxy to their worst ever start to a Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Remarkably though, LA Galaxy’s winless 2020 has not been accompanied by a single HT deficit (HT: W1, D3), with the team shipping an average of two second-half goals per game.
That tendency to collapse after the HT recess has contributed to an unenviable winless record when scoring the opening goal (D1, L1). However, history demands plenty of opportunity for goals, with both teams scoring in each of the last seven H2H meetings.
Houston Dynamo have also failed to win their opening four games of the MLS season – for the first time since 2009. They opened the scoring only once across those four games. Having lost 11 of their last 14 MLS matches (W2, D1) without suspended winger Alberth Elis, their task becomes only harder.
The Dynamo possess plenty of attacking options, scoring in all but one of their last ten MLS fixtures (W3, D2, L5). Yet, with clean sheets eluding them for their last nine matches – and eight of those nine matches producing at least three total goals – action at both ends is anticipated.
Players to watch: Galaxy winger Cristian Pavón has found the back of the net in both of his meetings with Houston. Meanwhile, Mauro Manotas is Houston’s only available player to have recorded their first goal in at least two of their last ten MLS matches.
Stat attack: LA Galaxy’s four 2020-held MLS matches have all seen eight or fewer total corner kicks taken.
Houston have collected the most total cards in their last three MLS matches, with the other yielding a tied result.
Five of the last seven H2Hs have produced at least four total goals each.
