Tuesday night’s comeback against Middlesbrough secured Luton Town all three points and fired them into the top six, albeit temporarily. They return to Kenilworth Road to entertain a Stoke City side who harbour similar aspirations of a top-six finish, knowing victory would extend their six-game unbeaten streak here and mark a third successive Championship home win for the first time since October 2020.
The chances of securing that victory appear bleak however, amid a ten-game winless H2H run against the ‘Potters’ (D3, L7). Compounding their fears is coach Nathan Jones’ poor record against his former employers whilst in charge of the ‘Hatters’, losing both prior H2H clashes ‘to nil’ – leaving Luton needing a ‘day of firsts’ to climb back into the playoff places.
Stoke’s somewhat positive start to the season had been dampened by a four-match winless run (D1, L3), but a midweek win at Blackpool propelled them back into the playoff positions. Stoke’s away form this season has been far from sparkling – in fact, their two wins on the road (D2, L4) is the joint fewest of anyone occupying a playoff spot ahead of the round.
Victory at Bloomfield Road was the Potters’ first shut-out on the road since their first away game of the season against Birmingham City (0-0). It’s been a different story in Bedfordshire though, with an unbeaten five-match H2H run against Luton (W3, D2), so don’t bet against them securing back-to-back Championship away wins for the first time in just over a year.
Players to watch: Luton’s Harry Cornick has nine Championship goal involvements already this season (7G, 2A), one more than he managed in the entirety of last season (eight). Meanwhile, lucky charm Steven Fletcher netted Wednesday’s winner, and his side have only been on the losing side twice in the last 16 games in which he has found the net (W11, D3).
