After getting the season off to a flyer with seven points from the opening three rounds, La Liga (LL) newcomers Mallorca have crashed back down to earth with four winless games since (D1, L3) and are beginning to look like the pre-season relegation candidates they were touted as being. Mallorca’s last two matches have now seen them pick the ball out of their own net nine times, and before the tenth minute in each.
‘Too hot’ and ‘too early’ were two of the excuses from some Mallorca fans as to why the expected capacity was down by nearly a third in their 3-2 home defeat vs Osasuna last weekend, but fans missed out on last weekend’s top scoring LL game despite the ball being in play for less time than any other match!
Mallorca manager Luis García will want fans behind the team here as he looks to stop the slide, and may see a home game against Levante as a gift considering the side from Valencia are one of only three clubs yet to pick up a LL win this campaign (D4, L3). In fact, the last time Levante went winless in their opening seven league games they were relegated, so a win is of the essence for visiting boss Paco López.
However, Levante’s current seven-game winless run at Mallorca doesn’t bode well (D2, L5), nor does their failure to score more than once in ten of their previous 11 LL road trips (W1, D3, L7).
Key battle: Dani Rodríguez will look to get Mallorca off to a strong start after netting before half-time in two of their last three home games. In his way (or potentially not) is Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernández who’s picked up more red cards (one) than clean sheets this season!
Hot stat: Mallorca have scored before the 30th minute – and led at half-time – in three of their four LL home matches.
