• It took a second-half penalty from Raheem Sterling – his 100th Premier League (PL) goal – to vanquish a stubborn Wolves team on Saturday, a performance which Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola praised his side for their “patience”. A point clear at the top, the ‘Citizens’ now look to build on a perfect run of Premier League (PL) games since the start of November (W6), as they target an eighth clean sheet in ten PL home games.
• City will hope for a strong start, as they last failed to win a PL home game after scoring in the opening 15 minutes back in September 2020. They are also well known for capitalising on such an event, as six of City’s last seven PL wins by a margin of two or more goals have seen them score inside the first 15 minutes.
• Leeds United make their second road trip to a current top-three side in the space of less than a week. Their hopes of becoming just the fifth-ever PL side to complete successive 38-game seasons of top-half finishes after promotion are still looking slim, even though they put up an excellent fight last time out (L 2-3) in a fiesty game at Chelsea, and are at last producing some of the high-octane football that saw them claim ninth place last term.
• That result means Leeds have scored in all four of their PL away games played against the current top-three since their promotion to the top tier last year (W1, L3), netting twice or more on three occasions. The sole win came in last season’s corresponding fixture (W 2-1), but a repeat seems unlikely, with Leeds winning just once on the road this term.
• Players to watch: Bernardo Silva has netted City’s final goal of the day in four of their last six PL victories. Leeds’ first teenage PL goal scorer since James Milner (April 2004), Joe Gelhardt will be aiming to build on his equaliser at Stamford Bridge, when he scored with his first very touch!
• Hot stat: Five of Leeds’ last seven PL away defeats have seen the decider arrive in the second half.
