Manchester City – RB Leipzig Preview
- After winning their last three Premier League games ‘to nil’, Manchester City will now look to carry that impressive form into the UEFA Champions League (UCL), where they share Group A with another pre-tournament favourite, PSG. Having lost the 2020/21 final, this is the seven-time English champions’ chance to grab an important three points before their trip to Paris on UCL matchday two, and a formidable home record vs German teams (W10, D2, L1) should have opponents RB Leipzig quaking in their boots for this first-ever H2H.
- With City’s last three competitive home wins all ending 5-0, and their previous five UCL games at the Etihad also ending in victory, there’s little doubt City’s attack can produce the goods. However, this is also a side that recorded a 790-minute UCL run without conceding last term – the second-longest streak in UCL history – so their backline can’t be forgotten either.
- Leipzig travelled to Manchester just last year, where they were thumped 5-0 by City’s rivals Man United in their heaviest-ever European defeat. Keeper and new captain Péter Gulácsi was between the sticks that day, just as he was on Saturday when Leipzig were easily beaten 4-1 by Bayern Munich, and another hammering at the hands of European royalty could well be flashing through his mind.
- For a side that finished second in the 2020/21 Bundesliga, it’s been a hugely disappointing start to 2021/22 so far (W1, L3). Key player departures haven’t helped, but that’s still the worst four-game Bundesliga start Leipzig have ever recorded, so the pressure is already growing on new coach Jesse Marsch.
- Key battle: Ferran Torres netted a brace in City’s last home match, and scored the opener in his previous UCL start. He’s up against Leipzig keeper Gulácsi, who’s conceded an average of 2.75 goals across his last four UCL games vs English clubs.
- Hot stat: Leipzig’s last six UCL defeats have been ‘to nil’.
