Manchester City responded to Liverpool winning on Tuesday by beating Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 one day later as the thrilling battle for the Premier League (PL) title continues with neither side yet able to land a knockout blow. One point ahead, City know that six more wins will see them retain their title, although they’ll hope for good news after a few players picked up knocks in midweek.
The ‘Cityzens’ have scored 2+ goals in each of their last five home league matches (W3, D1, L1) so there’s every chance of more entertainment for the home fans here, who will expect to find Watford easier to break down than Brighton. Encouragingly on that front, Man City are yet to concede in home league action this term against sides currently in the bottom five (W4)!
Watford seem doomed to an immediate return to the Championship as they lie seven points behind 17th-placed Everton having played one more game than them. Poor starts and conceding late – and sometimes both, as against Brentford last time out (L 2-1) – have scuppered their efforts at escaping the bottom three.
Unsurprisingly, given how poor they’ve been at home, they’ve won 68% of their PL points on the road after getting some kind of result in three of their last five league away games (W2, D1, L2). That percentage is unlikely to increase here though, as they’ve lost their last seven visits to the blue half of Manchester, conceding an average of 3.57 goals per game!
Players to watch: Gabriel Jesus hasn’t lost any of the 45 PL games in which he’s scored for Manchester City (W42, D3) while on a similar note, Watford fans might be praying Ismaïla Sarr finds the net as they’re unbeaten this term after he’s done so (W3, D1).
Hot stat: Man City have scored a league-high 16 goals from set pieces this term.
