• Manchester United will have revenge on their mind when UEFA Champions League (UCL) action resumes, as they host a rerun of last season’s UEFA Europa League final where the ‘Red Devils’ lost 11-10 on penalties to opponents Villarreal. United’s opening UCL game didn’t go to plan either, losing 2-1 after conceding in the 95th minute against Young Boys. They’re now looking to avoid losing their opening two fixtures of a European tournament for the very first time.
• Amid his poor managerial UCL track record, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær will have to rally his troops after consecutive 1-0 domestic home losses. Of the 22 managers who have taken charge of a single English club in 10+ UCL matches, only Solskjær has lost more than 50% of his games, losing seven of 11 UCL fixtures as United manager.
• Villarreal are coming off the back of a stubborn 0-0 draw with Real Madrid, as they preserved their unbeaten start to their La Liga campaign. But don’t be fooled, it hasn’t been a glamorous run, with five of their six domestic fixtures ending in a draw (W1), as well as sharing the spoils in their UCL opener with Atalanta.
• Their H2H history with their hosts also screams a draw, as all five of their European matches have ended honours even (90 mins only), including their four UCL fixtures which all ending scoreless. However, the ‘Yellow Submarine’ are currently onboard a 17-game undefeated streak in UEFA competition (W12, D5), the longest such run of any participating side.
• Players to watch: Cristiano Ronaldo (MUN) is set to overtake Iker Casillas and make a record 178th UCL appearance, though he’s never scored in four appearances in the competition against Villarreal. Arnaut Danjuma (VIL) is looking to become the first Dutch player to score in three of his first four UCL appearances.
• Hot stat: United have failed to win any of their last seven UCL fixtures against Spanish opposition (D3, L4).
