Freshly boosted by their midweek win over Qarabag in the UEFA Europa Conference League, Marseille are guaranteed to end this Ligue 1 matchday in second spot. The feat of them scoring in 11 consecutive league matches (W7, D2, L2) suggests they’re primed to test struggling Clermont, and claim a fourth straight win against newly-promoted sides.
Marseille are ranked just ninth in terms of home form though, after dropping points in six of their previous nine league games here (W3, D4, L2). The nine-time Ligue 1 champions therefore desperately need a turnaround in home fortunes, but Marseille’s current run of four league matches at Stade Velodrome without a single clean sheet may continue to plague them.
Visiting Clermont’s first run of consecutive wins – against two top-five sides – since the opening two matchdays came to a disappointing end last weekend, with a 2-1 home loss against relegation-battling Saint-Étienne despite scoring first. That now puts Clermont uncomfortably close to the relegation zone, and the fact they have lost their previous two H2Hs vs Marseille only makes matters worse.
A clear improvement in away form is to be noted, as Clermont have claimed full points in two of their last three league road trips, after being winless in the previous eight (D2, L6). Having also scored 54% of their away goals in Ligue 1 after the 75th minute, Clermont could give Marseille a few jitters if the match enters the closing stages all square!
Players to watch: Cengiz Ünder has scored Marseille’s opener in five of seven goalscoring Ligue 1 matches, including the reverse H2H. Clermont’s own potential hero could be Mohamed Bayo, as he has scored five (45%) of his team’s 11 Ligue 1 away goals, four times as the game’s first scorer.
Hot stat: Marseille are one of just two Ligue 1 sides yet to score within the opening 15 minutes at home.
