Winless in their last three Ligue 1 matches (D1, L2), Marseille ended the last round ten points off the French title pace and currently sit outside the Champions League qualification spots. In fact the hosts suffered back-to-back league losses prior to the international break, the same amount of defeats that manager Jorge Sampaoli experienced in his first 17 matches in charge.

In that streak, Sampaoli’s side netted in all 12 matches, whilst this season, Marseille have scored two or more goals in all four of their home league matches (W2, D1, L1) as their frontline continues to fire on all cylinders.
Visiting Lorient arrive here after making a fantastic start to the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season (W3, D5, L1) and on the back of a six-match unbeaten run in the French top flight (W2, D4), their longest such run in Ligue 1 since a stretch of seven matches between March and May 2014!
Despite their solid start this season, Christophe Pélissier’s side still remain winless across their last 20 away Ligue 1 games (D11, L9). That streak is now both the longest current run in the French top flight and Lorient’s joint-longest run away from home in Ligue 1 history, which won’t inspire much confidence here against a side that is strong at home.
Key battle: With starman Dimitri Payet set to be sidelined for this clash, Marseille could instead rely on striker Bamba Dieng, who has three league goals in six appearances. Lorient goalkeeper Paul Nardi will be looking to halt him, but the 27-year-old has just three clean sheets in nine league outings this season.
Hot stat: Despite their lofty league position, Lorient have only averaged 3.33 corners per match this season – Ligue 1’s second lowest tally.
