After failing to score for a third consecutive Ligue 1 match for the first time since April 2021 last time out, Metz’s woeful winless run was extended to six games (D3, L3), deepening fears that relegation is on the horizon this campaign. While the gap to safety isn’t unassailable, they’ve now won just once since the turn of the year, a joint-league low.
Unusually for a side threatened with the drop, Metz have picked up just eight of their meagre 22-point haul in home games (36%), which quite comfortably makes them Ligue 1’s worst performing home side. After conceding twice in each home defeat this calendar year, Metz’ home faithful are still waiting to witness their side win on home soil in 2022 (D1).
There are certainly no looming relegation fears for Lens, who are likely more annoyed at being sat in mid-table after flirting with the European placings for much of the campaign. A strong run of form could yet see Lens climb back into the mix, though they have now lost more games across the last ten league games (W4, D1, L5) than they did across the opening 17 matchdays!
Despite their recent decline, they have recorded two victories from three away league games in 2022, which is as many as they recorded across their eight prior such trips. However, they may need to score twice to get anything from this outing as Frank Haise-managed sides have never kept a clean sheet in his three personal H2Hs (W1, D1, L1).
Players to watch: Since scoring in the reverse, both of Metz striker Nicolas de Préville’s league goals have come at home. When Jonathan Clauss plays well, Lens usually do well themselves as ten of their last 13 points gained came in games when he made a goal contribution (G2, A2).
Hot stat: Lens have failed to win five of their eight away league games as pre-match betting favourites (W3, D1, L4).
