A return of just one loss from five Ligue 1 matches (W3, D1, L1) has taken Nantes to just four points off a European spot ahead of this weekend’s action. Much of their success this season has come due to a very productive forward line, as you have to go back to 2000/01 to find the last time Nantes scored more goals after 21 rounds (26) – a season where they finished as champions!
Nantes’ recent home form offers further encouragement, as their return of four wins across their last seven league outings at the Stade de la Beaujoire represents more than in the whole of the 2020/21 campaign (three). Making a quick start could prove vital for them again, as ‘Les Canaris’ remain unbeaten across five home top-flight fixtures in which they’ve scored the opener (W4, D1).
Although relegation-battling Lorient are winless across their previous 14 top-flight outings (D5, L9), and their last victory came all the way back in September, it’s not all doom and gloom as they currently possess two points more than what they had at this stage last term when they survived the drop. However the fact that they’ve failed to score over 1.5 goals in any match across that winless streak highlights that their attacking output remains problematic.
The visitors’ also struggle on the road, as this season they’re still looking for their first league win away from home (D4, L7) – losing each of the previous six. Even worse, Lorient’s current run of 26 road trips without a league win is the longest in the club’s 95-year history!
Players to watch: Defender Andrei Girotto has been Nantes’ first scorer in his last five goalscoring Ligue 1 matches, whilst similarly, Armand Laurienté has scored Lorient’s opening goal in the last five top-flight matches that he’s got on the scoresheet, including the corresponding H2H last season.
