New coach Christophe Galtier has shown he means business as his new-look Nice side thumped reigning champions and Galtier’s former employers Lille 4-0 on matchday two. Yet to concede this season (W1, D1), Nice now have the chance to start a new top-fight campaign with three consecutive clean sheets for the first time since 1970/71 as they look to put a ninth place finish in 2020/21 behind them – their worst Ligue 1 (L1) placing across the last six seasons.
Now last season’s title-winning coach will look to spin his magic on Nice’s top-flight H2H record vs Marseille in a match-up that stretches back to 1932/33 (W27, D22, L56). More recently Nice put three past Marseille in the last H2H at the Allianz Riviera (W 3-0), one of seven L1 home wins (from seven) last season where Nice scored before HT.
Also unbeaten after their first two games (W1, D1), Marseille’s start to their L1 campaign has been an exciting one, with two games which both saw one side go 2-0 up at HT but still fail to win! Inspired by Lille’s shock title success last term, Marseille will likely harbour ambitions of improving on their fifth-place finish in 2020/21 and launch a real assault on the L1 title this time around.
France’s only previous UEFA Champions League winners certainly have the pedigree, and an away win on matchday one has already equaled the number of away victories they managed in their 13 L1 road trips prior (W1, D6, L6).
Players to watch: Kasper Dolberg’s goal after 57 seconds vs Lille was the fastest L1 strike by a Nice player in over eight years – he followed it up with a goal after HT too. Despite several notable transfer moves, it’s Marseille stalwart Dimitri Payet who’s impressed so far – he’s scored three goals, including his side’s last of the match twice.
Hot streak: There hasn’t been a goalless draw in 35 consecutive H2Hs.
