Rennes owe much of their lofty position to a grand autumn, predominantly characterised by a run of five straight Ligue 1 home wins spanning back to a 6-0 rout of Clermont (Sep 22). While their next opponents should put up a far better fight, an early lead could be telling, given Rennes’ perfect return from four home league games led at half-time.
Albeit within a season cancelled after 28 rounds, milestones in Rennes’ 2019/20 Ligue 1 campaign (3rd place) give extra cause for hope. They’re currently four points ahead of where they stood after 15 rounds in that campaign, thanks in part to a 71% win rate as Ligue 1 home favourites this term.
Reigning champions Lille travel here in torrid form, failing to beat Nantes last time out (D 1-1) to go winless in a sixth league match following the October international break (D4, L2). As underdogs for this clash, the ailing kings will likely revert to a defensive start, with five of those six games drawn/lost seeing them shut out the opposition up until at least the half-hour mark.
The crown has proven particularly heavy for Lille on their travels, with ‘Le LOSC’ winning just once on the road in Ligue 1 this season (D3, L4). With the visitors conceding and dropping points beyond the 80th minute in the last two of those road trips, their ability to hold on to crucial points remains a real doubt.
Players to watch: Martin Terrier netted Rennes’ earliest Ligue 1 home goal of the season (8’) in their most recent league win at Roazhon Park (2-0 vs Montpellier). However, Jonathan David went one better in Lille’s last top-flight road trip (D 2-2), netting twice inside the opening ten minutes!
