San Jose Earthquakes – Real Salt Lake Preview

San Jose Earthquakes finally scored their first opening goal of the 2020 MLS season, having previously taken points from three of the four previous fixtures (W1, D2, L1), even when failing to score first or at all.

Their sluggish starts have denied them a HT lead in all five of their fixtures this season (1H: D2, L3). Having conceded after the interval in just one group stage match, an improvement to their first 45 minutes could yield results. There is no denying that their attacking unit continues to work hard though, averaging 19 shots (including blocked attempts) a game in the group stage.

With the visiting side on the day not having won a H2H clash since 2015 (D4, L6), Real Salt Lake (RSL) will welcome the nullifying neutrality of Orlando, particularly having added two clean sheets in the group stage to their 0-0 result in the opening week. In fact, all five of their regular season fixtures in 2020 have produced no more than two goals.

With these two teams also having played out four MLS encounters with two or fewer goals since the start of 2018, all with 0-0 HT results, the H2H form also points to another tight and low-scoring encounter.

Players to watch: Veteran Chris Wondolowski (SJE) will be looking to record a run of at least three consecutive MLS scoring appearances for the 11th time since the start of 2011.

RSL’s Damir Kreilach has scored in two fixtures this season as well as in two of four starts against San Jose.

RSL’s three group stage fixtures all produced at least five total cards (average six per game).
