• A 3-1 defeat last time out halted Southampton’s joint-longest unbeaten run of this Premier League (PL) campaign (W2, D2), although manager Ralph Hasenhüttl remained upbeat about his side’s recent fighting spirit, saying in the wake of the loss “we lost against Wolves, but I am proud of what we are doing and how we are fighting”. They’ll now aim to build on a seven-game unbeaten PL run at home (W3, D4) – their best since March-October 2016.
• They face a tall order welcoming champions Manchester City though, particularly given that four of the last five H2H meetings at St Mary’s ended in defeat (W1). However, with wins in each of their last two matches against sides starting the day at the top of the Premier League – Everton and Liverpool, both last season – the ‘Saints’ should have some belief that they can cause an upset.
• Manchester City have already dropped points against Southampton this season in the reverse fixture (0-0), although you’d have to go back to 2002/03 for the last time they didn’t win at least one of their regular-season clashes with Southampton. That, plus the fact City have won 12 straight PL fixtures, is a big reason why they once again start as heavy betting favourites.
• Man City’s success this season has tied in with their ability to often take the initiative early on. No PL side has scored more goals inside the opening 15 minutes so far (12), and remarkably, Pep Guardiola’s men are yet to drop a point after grabbing the game’s first goal (W17).
• Players to watch: Southampton striker Armando Broja will be bidding to become just the second PL player ever to score in each of his first five home PL starts. City’s Raheem Sterling scored the winner in a 1-0 victory here last season, and his goal nearly produced the same H2H scoreline earlier this season, but that late strike was ruled out by VAR.
• Hot stat: Manchester City have conceded a league-low two first-half goals this season.
