A 5-1 defeat to Strasbourg has left record ten-time Ligue 1 champions St Étienne (D4, L6) rooted to the bottom of the table, a huge concern for this proud French club who haven’t accrued so few points after ten Ligue 1 matches since the 1988/89 campaign. Lamenting the league’s leakiest defence, they’ve already conceded 23 goals, worryingly more than at the same stage in their two previous relegation campaigns of 2000/01 and 1995/96.
Despite their winless start in 2021/22, the hosts have at least shown they have character, scoring the game’s second goal in five of the six league games to see them concede first. In this clash, ‘Les Verts’ have a golden opportunity to claim their first win of the campaign as Angers come to town, a side they haven’t lost to on home soil since 1972!
Visiting Angers were left frustrated last time out as an 87th minute penalty saw PSG claim a last-gasp win at Parc des Princes, despite ‘the Black and Whites’ leading 1-0 at half-time. That defeat means they’ve now won just one of their previous six Ligue 1 matches (D3, L2), although the legendary Raymond Kopa’s former club still occupy fifth spot and are only two points off second-placed Lens ahead of this matchday.
Although their away form in 2021/22 remains unimpressive (W1, D3, L1), Gerald Baticle’s side regularly find the net on the road, now scoring in their last six away league matches. Slight outsiders here, a good omen lies with the fact that the pre-match underdogs have lost just two of the ten L1 games involving Angers this campaign (W4, D4)!
Players to watch: Wahbi Khazri’s five L1 goals this season have come as St Étienne’s first goalscorer, but the battle to score first could also involve Angers’ Arnaud Nordin, who has netted first in two of the previous four H2Hs.
Hot stat: Six of the last seven Ligue 1 H2Hs have been level at HT.
