Swansea City followed up last week’s EFL Cup victory over Reading by securing their first league point of the campaign under new manager Russell Martin after a 0-0 home draw with Sheffield United. They’ll be hoping this can kick start a campaign that’ll result in at least a third consecutive appearance in the play-offs come the end of the campaign.
The ‘Swans’ goalless draw last weekend also meant that they’re unbeaten in their first home league game (W2, D2) for the fourth season running, and in each of those campaigns they’ve backed it up with another positive result in the following home clash (W2, D1). One immediate concern though is that they’ve won just two of their last nine competitive home fixtures (D3, L4), but their joint-biggest home win last season did come against Stoke City (2-0).
Stoke reverted to type when claiming a 0-0 draw with Birmingham City last weekend as this was their most popular Championship score last season (eight), and six of those eight bore draws came on the road. However, just one of the last 14 H2H encounters ended all-square.
Michael O’Neill’s side have secured clean sheets in four of their last six away league contests (W2, D2, L2), which is key given that they’ve struggled to shine in attack, netting under 2.5 goals in ten of their 13 away league matches of 2021.
Players to watch: Swansea’s Jamie Paterson hasn’t scored in the last four H2H meetings, but has been booked twice. He’ll face Stoke’s Sam Surridge, who has scored first or last in two of his three appearances since joining from Bournemouth.
Hot stat: Swansea last lost a home league game in August in 2018, whilst 2014 was when Stoke last won an away league fixture in this month.
