Hellas Verona produced an astonishing second-half display to turn around a 3-0 half-time deficit at Venezia in their last Serie A (SA) match to secure an incredible 4-3 victory. It was another Igor Tudor masterpiece as Verona have lost just twice since his arrival as manager (W6, D5) and have netted 3+ goals in five of those 13 outings – a feat they did just four times during the entirety of last SA season!
Verona haven’t lost any of their six home matches under Tudor’s management to date (W5, D1), last having a longer unbeaten run in SA here back in 2002 (seven). However, the hosts are winless in three home H2Hs vs visitors Atalanta (D1, L2), conceding eight goals during that run whilst scoring just one in return.
Atalanta remain the only unbeaten away side in SA this term (W7, D1) after beating Napoli 3-2 last weekend. That result made it five consecutive away league victories, just the second time they’ve managed that feat in their history, although they were also dumped out of the Champions League courtesy of a midweek loss to Villarreal.
The visitors are on an impressive run of five consecutive league victories though, netting three goals on average during that run, which has put them back into the Scudetto race. As Atalanta have won eight of their nine SA matches this season when they led at hallf-time (D1), they’ll hope for another early breakthrough here.
Players to watch: Verona’s Giovanni Simeone scored twice last time out and is just three strikes away from becoming the first foreign player to score 14+ goals for this club in a SA season. Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi opened the scoring versus Napoli and has been his side’s first scorer in three of his four goalscoring outings this term.
